Burning the flag at both ends

It seems the Met Police have let anti-terror laws go their heads, and they are now proposing a US-style law banning the burning of the Union Jack.  Presumably, they will want to see the St George Cross, the Red Dragon and the St Andrew’s Cross covered as well.

The Daily’s office is not – as you might have gathered – full of liberal libertarians, but this is a step too far in cracking down on dissent.  However, we aren’t willing to back Jenny Jones’ reason for opposing this new law: extremists need to “let off steam”…

“Let them burn flags. It is better than burning buildings. It is not desirable, but people have to let off steam somehow.”

Don’t burning flags give off toxic fumes?  Not very green….

I would like to see it written that burning flags is/or is not a political statement. Not sure freedom of speech covers it.

I am a ‘liberal libertarian’, and yet it doesn’t sit terribly comfortably with me, but then again neither does Michael Gove, and I’m not campaigning to get him banned either.

How about going for a run?

Not sure we want to have the police proposing new laws, though. New Labour’s hardly been shy about doing that, recently.

If the police get into the new laws business, too, then we might have to set up another agency to get on with the job of enforcing them.

    1. Not in favour of burning flags, but preferable to burning books and people, or indeed to eating people.

    2. Wholly in favour of giving the police more of what they want. Only criminals need be afraid! More CCTV, ID cards and a DNA database would be a start …

  4. concerned says:

People who burn either the union flag or the cross of st george should be asked to leave the country or thrown in a special prison for traitors

  5. “Only criminals need be afraid!”

Well, no. It’s more like ‘only people who currently do or want to do things that aren’t illegal but might be made illegal need be afraid’.

“People who burn either the union flag or the cross of st george should be asked to leave the country or thrown in a special prison for traitors”

I assume this only applies to English people?

FgvQOf Thank you for the material. Do you mind if I posted it in her blog, of course, with reference to your site?

  7. Precautions: Please don’t intercourse with your spouse. If you have gone to your physician you have most likely been misdiagnosed, then prescribed several different antibiotics or drugs to help you with your perceived ‘other’ health issues. There are 3 main symptoms of a yeast infection, the first is itchiness in the vulva and surrounding areas, it can become so unbearable at times.
