Remarkable scenes from White House Press Secretary, Tony Snow, as he embarked upon the not often used defence of: there have been worse scandals on Capitol Hill than the current scandal rocking the Republican leadership. That of the Congressman caught sending explicit messages to pages – the young messagers boys.
Snow – a former Fox News anchor – said that the scandal was merely a matter of “naughty emails”. Even Republicans have seen it as extraordinary that the White House thinks of sexually explicit advances to a minor from a Senior Representative in this way.
The comments came in an interview with CNN’s Soledad O’Brien, which we found on Crooks & Liars:
“Yes, look, I hate to tell you, but it’s not always pretty up there on Capitol Hill. And there have been other scandals, as you know, that have been more than simply naughty e-mails.”
(Republican) Speaker Hastert, who is just one pretzel and a heart attack away from the US Presidency, is claiming that he hadn’t seen the exchange before Friday. However, he is accused not of having seen the emails, but of having been warned of Foley’s conduct. He has claimed not to remember, but has not so far denied this accusation.
Meanwhile, the Congressman in question, Mark Foley, himself has booked into an alcoholism rehabilitation clinic.
