Exclusive: Iain Dale knows what everyone else knows too

Iain Dale thinks he has a scoop on his hands – Michael Meacher standing for Labour leadership.  He says in his “exclusive” piece tonight that, “I know for a fact that Meacher has been discussing a leadership bid”. Tonight, we can also exclusively reveal that WWII has ended and Attlee has won the election – sorry, is that old news?

To be fair to Iain, as a Tory, this might be news.  If you are a Labour activist it might have been news too – if it were this time last year.  Meacher has spent the last year not so subtly putting himself about and openly canvassing for support.

And there was more than a subtle hint on BBC Online in June.  And this ePolitix piece.  And this article in The Scotsman.  And Labour bloggers such as Chris Doidge. In fact, you only need to glance at LabourHome occasionally to have known this for months.  And if none of them, then surely Iain reads the Torygraph?

Still – his attempt at a Labour exclusive is so far better than any of the The Daily’s attempts to break into Tory world.  If anyone out there has any Tory tip-offs that we can’t glean from our routine surveillance of ConservativeHome, then do let us know…

I think Iain might need to move himself down his league table for this one. Not exactly breaking news is it!

  2. Andrea says:

and how much support did he get so far?

  3. Henry G says:

I’d rather see Alan Simpson stand than either McDonnell or Meacher.

  4. Henry G says:

But then again, I wouldn’t vote for any of them!

  5. Nick says:

It seems fairly likely that Alan Simpson was one of the two equally maverick Labour MPs that Iain Dale reported Meacher was talking to about it. Unfortunately for Meacher, that still leaves him 42 nominations shy of the ballot paper…

  6. Benjamin says:

Exclusive? Perhaps he was being ironic.

  7. You’d like to think Benjamin – but do Tories do irony?

  8. Apparently, despite all previous denials, Heseltine is planning to challenge Thatcher for the leadership.

I had the Meacher ‘scoop’ over a year ago, despite the fact that I always do my best to cut short any Meacher related discussions with comrades with a barrage of dismal X-Files related jokes.

Apparently Dana Scully is seriously considering an offer to be his running mate.

  9. Nick says:

Surely you’re not suggesting that Meacher is wrong to claim that the planes that flew into the WTC were in fact missiles disguised by holograms? Fired by the Freemasons, in league with the Opus Dei and aliens from space?

I don’t know how you can claim to be on the left.

  10. Ian G says:

    Sounds reasonable to me 😉

  11. Adele says:

Rather Meacher than McDonnell despite mad foreign policy conspiracies.
