News comes from Peter Gustavsson of a huge scandal that has embroiled the Swedish elections.
The General Secretary (Party no. 2 – head of organisation) of the right-wing Liberal Party has resigned following revelations that he had information for six months that was stolen from the Social Democratic party by a hacker.
The hacker had accessed the Social Democrats’ detailed election plans and security arrangements for ministers.
It remains to be seen how this will affect the outcome of the election as, although the scandal has dented the Liberals’ popularity, the Social Democrats haven’t been able to get on the front foot in the campaign due to the leaked plans.
The Liberals have now dropped 2.9% points in the the latest SIFO poll and the left are now polling ahead of the right, with Social Democrats, Greens and Left Party polling at 48.1% compared to 47.4 for the right-wing parties.
Peter says he will post something in English on his blog this evening. I’m sure it will be very interesting in this key election for the European left.
