Minister # 2 resigns?

I’ve started to hear rumours that Khalid Mahmood has now resigned as a Home Office minister. Will confirm when I can.

UPDATE:
It’s on the BBC Website, so presumably it’s true.

Deary me, it’s starting to look possible the party may force Blair out at conference…

  2. Andrea says:

Khalid Mahmood is the PPS of Home Office Minister Tony McNulty, but not a junior minister himself

  3. Andrea says:

Wyne David, Ian Lucas, Wright (I think David) and Mark Tami resigned as PPS too.

  4. You’re absolutely right and I should have known that. He was being touted as a minister by the BBC earlier, but is now being called, rather misleadingly, “a junior member of the government.”

  5. Andrea says:

I think Sky made the same mistake of BBC

  6. I wonder what odds you can get on him surving until May 31st now?

  7. nick says:

Hard to see how Blair can say he was going to sack Watson if he does not now sack Kevin Brennan. And did Sion Simon and Chris Bryant ever actually quit or are they still PPSs? If so then what happens to them?

  8. Ian G says:

I think I saw it posted on another forum that a whip had signed the letter then asked for his name to be removed after a conversation with Hilary Armstrong. I assume that is Kevin Brennan.

A bit of a ridiculous position all round really.

No idea about Chris Bryant and Sion Simon. There are going to be plenty of ministers struggling to find PPSs…

  9. Chris Bryant resigned a few weeks back over house of lords reform I think.

  10. nick says:

They were already so short of willing bag carriers that they made Steve Pound PPS to the Minister for Counter-Terrorism. (Try not to think about that too much.) You’re right about Bryant – should’ve known not to rely on the papers. Guess Brennan may have retracted, though that still leaves Simon. And that’s just the letter that was leaked – supposedly there was also one from the 2005 intake.

  11. At this rate I might have to send Blair a letter myself, just to be considered a member of the Labour Party.

Wouldn’t want to dwell on the leadership bloodbath, though. Just something conversational. Such as:

    Dear Tony,

You must be very pleased to hear that your favourite football team Newcastle United have finally offloaded atrocious French centre-back Jean Alain Boumsoung.

I imagine you’re equally pleased at their success in aquiring Manchester United frontman Giuseppi Rossi on a season long loan.

Who do you think will win the Champions League this year?

Hope things are going well in Downing Street.

    See you soon,

    David

Does anyone want to join me in signing this.

  13. Den says:

Kevin Brannan refused to sign the letter when asked.
Chris Bryant resigned as a PPS a few weeks ago to campaign for Lords reform.
Sion Simon was not a PPS

  14. Sion Simon was PPS to Ian Pearson. I presume he’s one of those who resigned today.

  15. Can you add my name to that letter David?

  16. Max says:

Ian Pearson’s PPS is Celia Barlow. Sion Simon is a backbencher as far as I know.

  17. nick says:

Bizarre – both the Guardian and BBC reported he was a PPS, as I think did most of the broadsheet press. There isn’t a public list of PPSs these days is there?

  18. Dod list him as having been Ian Pearson’s PPS. They don’t detail when he resigned though.

  19. Andrea says:

Barlow became PPS after the May reshuffle. Simon was his PPS before May 2006
