The silly season

For those who have expressed concern that The Daily has found not just one, but two front pages of the Independent worthy of note over the last week, please rest assured.

Today the paper returns to its traditional interpretation of news values, devoting the entire front and second pages to a tree blight affecting horst chestnut trees, which may lead to a nationwide shortage of, erm, conkers.

What really earns the Indy our Newspaper of the Week award is that they then dedicate a two page spread to mocking stories that other papers have run during the silly season.

In other news, which the Independent sadly lacked the space to carry, there is civil war in Senegal, Israel continues its offensive in Gaza and the US Marines call up reservists, though they did find room for a full three sentences on the Darfur refugee crisis.
