Open democracy, US style

The White House press room is moving across the street from the White House for some refurbishment. The press corps is our version of the staid old Lobby, and all press briefings are televised, often on several stations.

Bush went down to the press room yesterday to wish them well in their new home, and it is harder to hate him when he is White House press corps has their own blog – which all journalists contribute to – shows how different the press is treated, and treats themselves in the States.

It is only a couple of years since it was accepted that journalists here could even mention that Lobby briefings took place. When will our closed Lobby system become open to the voters?
