Rail union ASLEF is celebrating partial victory in the case brought against it to the Certification Officer by disgraced former General Secretary Sean Brady.
Brady was forced out of the union following months of tension between him and the union’s executive, which came to a head in a fight at the union’s barbeque.
The Officer found that although he had been wrongfully dismissed, he had not been wrongfully expelled. The crucial distinction means that although Brady will be awarded compensation, it will be for one year’s salary, thought to total somewhere over £50,000, rather than figures of anything up to £500,000 that some ASLEF figures had feared.
He has no right to reinstatement and, unless he goes to the high court, this will hopefully be the end of the matter.
